When dry shampoo hit the shelves it instantly became every girl's favorite product, including yours truly. Why? It’s just so handy, like a shower without all of the work! Dry shampoo is a powder with oil absorbing properties that helps to extend style, dry up oily roots, and add texture. Most importantly, it prolongs the need to shampoo providing those precious additional days without having to wash your hair. Like me, you’re probably grabbing for your can of dry shampoo on mornings when you’re not planning to wash your hair, in the evenings to re-style for a night out, or after the gym when you’re really short on time.
Here are 3 new ways you could be using dry shampoo that just might change your life!
Use dry shampoo on freshly cleaned hair. Let me set the stage. It’s going to be a beautiful day. You’re planning on wearing that cute new sundress and sandals, It’s a hair wash day and you’ve got the week planned out. Clean and straight today, waved tomorrow, and up on day three. You grab your blow dryer and go to work drying each section aiming to get your hair straight, sleek, and shiny. You set down the dryer, spritz on some workable hair spray and off you go only to grab a glimpse in the mirror an hour later and find your hair has puffed and frizzed. Why does this happen? Because hot hair doesn’t equal dry hair. For whatever reason you left a percentage of moisture in your hair OR the heat of the blow drying raised your body temp making it impossible to get your hair fully dried. Here’s what you can do. Apply your dry shampoo to clean hair. This will soak up any excess moisture you have missed and just might give you your best hair day of the week.
Just before bedtime. Ward off bed head by using dry shampoo before you go to sleep. Spray in your dry shampoo to soak up those excess oils and wake up with a more manageable mane.
Add texture. Use dry shampoo to add some grit and texture to the hair before curling. This is the only time I recommend adding dry shampoo to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. The product added will give your hair some grit allowing it hair to hold style longer, especially if you’re planning to curl freshly washed hair.
How to Apply Dry Shampoo?
Part hair randomly in 5 - 7 places throughout your head
Hold dry shampoo bottle 6 - 8 inches away from the scalp and spray directly onto the roots
Wait 2 minutes and then distribute by brushing it through
Which Dry Shampoo is Best?
Formulation has come a long way since dry shampoo hit the market. The first few I tried were either too wet, too sticky or left my hair feeling too dirty. In my search for a dry shampoo that worked for me for I found two I really like.
They’re both light, airy, fine mists. They go on clear with minimal residue and Water Killer even comes in a brunette formulation.
If you have any questions about your own styling products and how to use them feel free to ask me at your next appointment. Or better yet bring your products with you and I'll show you how to use them. Until then wishing you happy hair days every day.
